Why I Charge for a Discovery Session: Respect, Clarity, and Not Wasting Your Time

Cheryl Paris | Work Stress & Burnout Specialist

Let me be direct with you: I currently charge £15 for a Discovery Session, and I know that might make some of you instinctively reach for the eject button. But before you do, hear me out.

We’ve all been there. You book what sounds like a helpful consultation, settle in with your tea, and suddenly you’re caught in a sales funnel complete with limited-time bonuses, fake deadlines, and someone gently but firmly nudging you toward a program with a name that sounds like it was generated under a full moon. The whole experience leaves you feeling manipulated, not supported.

That’s not what this is about.

Clarity Is an Act of Respect

Here’s the thing about unclear expectations: they breed resentment. At work, we see this all the time. Someone strolls into a meeting ten minutes late because they were outside having a cigarette, and everyone else is expected to just accept it because “that’s just how they are.” But that’s not how they are—that’s disrespect dressed up as personality.

The same principle applies to support work, therapy, and coaching. When expectations aren’t crystal clear from the beginning, you’re setting up an atmosphere where disappointment can start unpacking its suitcases before anyone even realizes there’s a problem.

I’ve been on both sides of this. I’ve worked with people where I thought one thing was happening, they thought another, and nobody realized the mismatch until we were already disappointed. You know that feeling—when a few weeks into working together, you discover that your expectations and their expectations weren’t even in the same room. Possibly not even in the same library.

That’s why I believe in front-loaded clarity.

Not because I want everything to be stiff and corporate—nobody needs therapy with an emotional temperature gauge on it. But clarity is kind. Clarity protects both people. It means you know what you’re stepping into, I know what I’m offering, and neither of us has to pretend later that we magically understood something that was never properly discussed.

Why the Discovery Session Starts with Awareness

In the ABGW Method®, the Discovery Session is the first step for a reason. “A” stands for Awareness, and awareness isn’t about labeling you or making you feel worse. It’s about understanding where you are right now, what seems to be happening, and what support might actually fit your life.

This matters especially when you’re dealing with stress and anxiety. You’re probably tired. You’re likely feeling overwhelmed. You might be overthinking, sleeping badly, and quietly wondering whether you’re being ridiculous for needing help in the first place.

You’re not ridiculous. You’re just trying to make a decision while your nervous system is already juggling office chairs.

The High-Functioning Woman’s Dilemma

Here’s what I’ve noticed: high-functioning women are exceptionally good at delaying support. Not because they’re silly, but because they’ve been trained—really well trained, rewarded, and occasionally blackmailed—into being capable.

You’re the one people rely on. The one who remembers. The one who sorts things out. The one who stays calm. The one who gets the email out and the project done. And because you’re capable, everyone assumes you’re fine. Sometimes you assume it too.

You tell yourself: I should be able to handle this. It’s not so bad. Other people have it worse. I just need to get through this week.

But this week becomes next week, next week becomes next month, and suddenly you’re lying awake at 2 a.m. mentally replying to emails and replaying conversations from three Tuesdays ago. Your body feels like it’s on permanent standby.

That’s the private cost of holding everything together.

The Money Question

When support finally starts to feel like an option, another barrier appears: money. Even a small amount can trigger that strange little voice asking, Should I really spend money on this?

And this is where I get lovingly direct: Are you worth the price of a packet of cigarettes? Are you worth that bottle of wine? Are you worth less than that luxury sandwich deal with the overpriced pressed juice?

Because £15 isn’t a grand luxury price. It’s a small commitment threshold. It’s a pause. It’s you saying to yourself: My well-being is serious, and it’s worth a serious conversation.

Here’s the beautiful part: if you decide to continue with Her Guru Hypnotherapy and Coaching—whether that’s the Emotional Survival Kit, the 31 Days to Balance and Well program, or one-to-one work—that £15 is credited toward your next step. The Discovery Session effectively becomes free.

And if someone books but doesn’t attend, or cancels outside the cancellation policy? That £15 goes to Starting Point, a local charity supporting young people aged 16-21 through mentoring. Either way, the money does something useful.

What Actually Happens in a Discovery Session

A Discovery Session is a 30-to-40-minute conversation. I say “approximately” because I don’t like putting fixed timescales on things that need to be human. It’s structured but not stiff. Focused but not cold. Truly practical.

We talk about what’s happening for you right now—whether that’s work-related stress, anxiety, sleep disruption, burnout signals, or guilt about needing support. We look at what’s already been tried, what feels realistic, and what feels like too much. We explore whether self-led tools, structured programs, or one-to-one work might be a better fit.

Sometimes the most useful outcome is discovering that I’m not the right support for you. And that’s allowed. I’d rather tell you the truth than do the wrong thing.

The Discovery Session isn’t therapy. It’s not there to diagnose, provide crisis support, medical advice, or any kind of advice, really. It’s not a guaranteed treatment plan, and it’s absolutely not a sales pitch.

Think of it as a sorting room. A calm, honest, reality-first conversation where we start sorting what’s happening, what support fits, and what the next right step could be.

The Difference Between Relief and Restoration

I always like to define a difference between relief and restoration. Relief is feeling better in the moment. Restoration is understanding what support actually helps you recover, rebuild, and stop circling around the same problem.

The Discovery Session can help you name what’s happening. It can help you understand whether you need a quick tool, a structured program, deeper one-to-one support, or a completely different professional route. Sometimes just having one clear conversation saves you months of guessing.

You’re Not Weak for Wanting Support

If you’re reading this and thinking, Actually, I do need to have a conversation—then the next step is simple. Book a Discovery Session. Bring one honest question. You don’t need a polished explanation. You don’t need to arrive perfectly organized. That’s what we work together to do.

But before you go, I want you to hear this clearly:

You are not weak for wanting support. You are not dramatic for wanting clarity. And you’re not wasting anyone’s time by taking your stress seriously.

Every step you take, no matter how small, is a step toward a brighter, more balanced future. Trust in your journey. Remember, progress is progress no matter the pace.
